The Art of Living Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization, was inspired by the programs of Indian spiritual leader and humanitarian Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that began in 1982. It has been in the U.S. since 1989. Accredited as a United Nations Non-Governmental organization in 1996, it is now one of the UN's largest volunteer-based NGOs. Its popular "Part I" course that teaches pranayama and Sudarshana Kriya has been taken by over 20 million people worldwide. In areas hit by disasters, the foundation provides programmatic and emergency relief assistance and support to the victims including programs to ameliorate post-trauma stresses. In the US, the foundation runs special programs returning war veterans, prisoner reform programs and stress elimination programs for corporations and working adults and programs that are helping turn around youth in inner cities away from gang violence, drugs and alcohol to the path of service.
The Art of Living's mission is of a "crime-free, stress-free and violence-free world" based on a yoga-based lifestyle.
